Term 3 - Storage Devices




Statement of Inquiry

Data storage has evolved through technological advances in the medium of storage devices


Introduction: 

A storage device is a piece of computer equipment where information can be kept and stored. There are two types of storage devices - a primary storage like RAM and a secondary storage like a hard drive. They can be stored outside the CPU - Central Processing Unit (external) or stored inside the CPU (internal). Storage devices are also referred to as digital storage, storage media and storage medium. The storage devices are an essential part of the computer and without them the computer wouldn't be able to save any settings and information. Secondary storage devices usually have a large storage capacity and they store data permanently. Examples of secondary storage devices include disk drive and USB storage drive. Storage devices can store information both permanently or temporarily. Primary storage devices are generally small and made to hold data temporarily and are internal in the computer, they have the fastest data speed access. However secondary storage devices have a larger storage capacity and store data permanently and they are both internally and externally. 


Task: Creating a booklet for Storage devices 

Target Audience: Year 7 students 

Global Context 


Information Literacy

During this topic I will be using the skills of researching to find out information about storage devices for the booklet I will be creating as my project for the year 7s this term. The main research engine which I will be using is Google and basically going from site to site to find out information. I will be trying to avoid Wikipedia and only using trustworthy sites such as BBC bite size. Since this is aimed for year 7s, I will write my information in simple English and in bullet points so the information can be easily understood and it’s not boring for them to read. Also i will try and use some books from the school library, simply to check if the information on the internet is correct. To display my booklet, I will be using the internet to find out ideas such as models etc. so the year 7s will be interested in reading the booklet and it won’t just seem like a boring book. 




Communication 

To display my information, I will be creating a model so the students of year 7 will be fascinated by it and will want to read my booklet. Another ‘tactic’ that will enable the students of year 7 to understand devices is by adding a lot of pictures to make it look like there is less writing and more images. In addition I will be using bright and vibrant colors such as reds and yellows; I will try and stay away from blacks and greys. I will use bullet points to display my information and will keep it concise and clear and easy to understand for year 7s. The type of font that I will use will be bold and big, easily read and a fun and bubbly font – not cursive or writing that can’t be understood. 



Fairness and Development 

This term I will be creating a booklet about storage devices which is aimed to teach year 7s about this topic. I will be sharing resources and ideas with them so they can learn about this topic and use it in the future when they are in IT class or even in other classes. I, as a year 8 student, have the responsibility of creating a booklet which is targeted for year 7s, easy to read and understand, visually appealing and not too boring, full of images and pictures which suite the topic. My aim is to help the year 7s understand what storage devices are and teach them about certain ones, while still having fun at the same time.

Reflection & Justification of Chosen Cover Page Design 

During this week in IT class, the task was to plan and sketch 2 different cover pages for a booklet about storage devices. I did not find this task hard especially because it was very easy to create, the only thing I didn't really enjoy was the drawing part because I'm not a very good drawer/ artist so I was tracing off the computer however sometimes the computer would close the screen and become black and so it would mess up the design and I would have to start again. I used very bright colors so the designs would stand out and made it look informal to suit the target audience which is Year 7 students. After I had sketched out the designs for both cover pages I took a picture of both of them, I saved them on Microsoft Word and annotated each design (what image I chose, why I chose that color, what font I chose and why etc). Overall, I think that both designs are suitable to the target audience which are Year 7's and both of them are neat, tidy and clear to look at; there isn't to much going on.

Design 1 

Design 1 uses colors related to IT such as blue and greys but still a pop of color of red which in my opinion makes it attractive. The clip art computer makes it suitable to the target audience because it is funny and will interest the students because it's not boring and formal. Also I incorporated a heart which is an emoji and a mouse which is related to IT. The font is bold and big enough to see and the use of the color red attracts the students.

Design 2 

Design 2 has a really bold picture of a USB which is a storage device, and mouse clicks which represent IT. To suit the target audience and not make it too formal, I added a picture of pacman which all children know. The title again is very bold and big - very easy to read and attracts people because of the use of the color blue - bright and happy.

Justification 

The final design which I have chosen is design 2 because it suits more the target audience and it's more visually appealing. The funny clip art of the computer which has eyes and a mouth is supposed  to attract the younger audience. Also the mouse and the wired shaped like a heart shows that IT is fun and amazing which will encourage students to learn about Storage Devices. I am planning to change the color scheme because red doesn't really fit the topic and I will probably use blue instead because it resembles computers and technology in general.

Reflection & Justification of Chosen Inner Page Design

This week we had to design our inner pages for our booklet. They both were based around the same idea of having text boxes and bullet points to minimize the amount of writing. This task was much easier than the previous task of the front cover because there wasn't as much drawing and coloring as there was before and I'm not a fan of art like drawing and coloring. Like the cover pages I didn't really enjoy this task because it included drawing and as I said before I'm certainly not the best artist. However I used the computer screen again and I managed to complete the task on time. I drew very bold and big pictures and used bright colors to attract the younger audience and make it seem like the booklet wasn't just writing. 

Design 1 

In Design 1 each page has a text box with bullet points and either the title (left) and the picture (right). By using this format, it gives an effect of a balance between writing and pictures. Also the size of the text box is the same as the size of the picture so there isn't more writing (makes it less boring and more interesting). The click on the mouse makes it look funny and interesting - as if you were clicking on a website or a name to find out more information. 

Design 2

In Design 2 the two pages are split in two - one dedicated for the writing and one dedicated for the picture. The title of the page is bold and bright and uses a font which is very easy to read. The page is not cramped and the picture is big and is the main highlight of the page. The second part of the inner page was dedicated to the writing. The writing is laid out in text boxes and I used bullet points so it is much easier to read and isn't boring to actually look at. 

Justification 

I have decided to choose Design 1 because it is the one that looks best and the one which I think would attract the target audience (Year 7). In my opinion the click really adds the finishing touches and simply look really good. Also there is very nice balance between the writing and the pictures. Also by having half writing and half pictures will help me to not write so much and keep the booklet fitted for year 7.

Reflection 

This lesson we were given the task to create the cover page of the storage devices booklet using Microsoft Publisher. As you can see from the picture above I didn't just stick to one design like I said I would on the previous page. I used both sketches and mixed ideas to create a totally new front cover, on top of that I also used other patterns which I had not added to my sketches but thought it would look really nice and finish the design off really well. I still used the same font but had to adjust the font size so the writing would fit on the page because the font I wrote on my sketch was way too big. I also chose to have a border on the two bottom corners of the front page - the borders had a keyboard pattern which was really nice and since it was white it was very subtle and didn't 'hide' the main picture which is the computer. Something else that I included in my final front cover was the background color. I felt like the light blue as a background would really fit with the whole color theme and the pictures as well which also fitted the color theme (blue and white). Mentioning the color - the font color is also a light blue but a little darker than the background. I still kept the mouse clicks because I really liked them, but instead of adding four (one on each corner), I decided to insert only two, on the top corners of the page. I enjoyed this task more because it simply involved finding pictures on the internet and choosing the color scheme, whereas on the tasks before I didn't really enjoy them because we had to draw. When doing this task, I was deciding between having a border or not and I tried adding different types of borders but non of them suited the front page so I decided to keep the front page without a border. After completing this task, I'm really excited to create my whole booklet and display it.

Final Reflection 

This lesson, was the last lesson I spent on my booklet on storage devices and this lesson Aria and Arnima completed my Peer Evaluation grading my booklet. I must say that I got very positive comments from my peers as both Aria and Arnima awarded me with full marks for the following subjects: Graphics, Content Accuracy, Attractiveness, Mechanics/grammar, Organisation, Ideas and References. This task was my favorite task this year, I preferred this than any other task we have done this year (Tinker CAD and Tech Fair)  because I discovered and improved my skills using Publisher. Regarding the booklet, I decided to add a sort of border on the corners of each page because I thought it made the booklet more attractive and visually appealing. Also I used good quality pictures and decent amount of writing; I had a good balance between images and text. To complete my booklet and make it even more suitable for the target audience, I decided to display my booklet on a model. The model was supposed to represent an Apple MAC computer. I chose a MAC because a lot of the younger generation knows the symbol of Apple and knows what a MAC looks like, instead of displaying it on a storage device which may not be in their interest. I must say that during this term, I had a very positive attitude towards this project and was always hitting deadlines so my work did not fall behind. I completed my model and the booklet before the deadline so I had time to improve them both, if I needed to but fortunately everything was okay and Ms. Veena even asked me to present to the class as well as 8BB (the other IT class), by doing this, I got a little bit of practice before I will present my project to them next week. I also improved my skill in referencing because this time instead of using an online generator, I typed the references by hand and it turned out that it was actually must faster typing them by hand than finding the generator and filling in the information before it actually gives you the website properly referenced. During the creation of the project, I also used something that I had never taken into consideration using before in IT which was an action plan. Using an action plan made my life so much easier when creating the booklet and the model because I was able to constantly see what I had done and what I still had to do. This helped me not fall behind during lessons/ after lessons so all my work was completed. However, I did fall behind once and it was because I hadn't completed my reflections on time. If I were to do this project again, I would certainly do longer and more detailed reflections because I feel like this term I didn't really put in as much effort with my reflections as I had previously done for other projects. Also I would add more pictures instead of more writing because, in my opinion pictures in some cases can explain something better rather than a paragraph of rubbish. Coming to an end to my reflection, I must say that I am very proud of the work that I have produced this term and the way that the booklet and model came out to be. This year I can say that I have put in a lot of effort and challenged myself more than I ever did in ICT class and thanks to Ms Veena, not only will the year 7s be learning something new and expand their knowledge on IT and storage devices but I have done a lot during this project. I now know a few things about IT which I had no clue about before. I am looking forward to next year and the next years project.

We were both intrigued and in love with the tiny dancers that we couldn’t resist but chose them and I think that by choosing to also do a DIY projector we have made ourselves a challenge.

Reflection:

In this lesson we got to choose our partner for the Tech Fair that is happening in March this term. My partner is Aria and I'm really happy that we got to choose our partners because I know that we can work really well together. We both decided that the Tiny Dancers were going to be our project because once I showed them to her, she was so fascinated and thought they were so cute; exactly what I had thought. But then we thought that we wanted to go even bigger (because in fact the tiny dancers are quite small) so we decided that on top of the dancers we would firstly film us making the tiny dancers and how they work etc. but then we will project the video. But not on just any ordinary projector, no, we will be making the projector using a shoe box and a magnifying glass. It wasn't hard making the PowerPoint, in fact we made it in the first 30 minutes of the lesson and so got the rest of the lesson just playing around and editing it to make it look formal and presentable. I'm very excited for this term and the 'journey' that we have ahead of us to create this project of ours.

Tech Fair - Week 1

Statement of Inquiry: Developments in technology could be seen as blessing or a curse depending on the impact it has on an individual or society. 
Inquiry Question: How can we use Technology to help develop our ideas to create a masterpiece for the ‘Tech Fair’?
ATL: Thinking skills and research skills

Here are a few ideas that I have chosen to do for the tech fair: 

  • Creating a stop motion film and then projecting it on a DIY projector 
  • Mini dancing ballerinas made out  of batteries 
  • creating an artwork out of old computer pieces e.g. CD's 
  • Click and grow machine which will grow strawberries 
  • Solar powered robot

I'm most interested in the Mini Dancing Ballerinas ideas because it's like nothing I have ever seen before and it is not the usual robot which everyone is most likely to chose. Basically these tiny dancers are a wire sculpture made out of copper wire and batteries which dance. This idea uses a homopolar motor which are not necessarily used as everyday motors but it is used in technology and science experiments because they involve electricity, wires, technology. This ideas came from a blog post which was written by Ana Dziengel. This product benefits the society because instead of throwing away your batteries or throwing away the little scraps of tissue paper that are practically useless you could re use them and recycle them by creating this quick and easy project that could even entertain children.

Reflection: 

I must admit my research went well and I found out a lot of ideas for the tech fair, and some interesting ideas like the Tiny Dancers came up which I am looking forward to sharing with my partner. The keywords that I used in the search engine were tech fair, project, ideas, easy, DIY, for high school but I also used Pinterest which then gave me the idea for the Tiny Dancers. When I was searching on google for ideas, I didn't get immediate results because a lot of the websites were for a science fair there weren't many interesting ideas for a tech fair. I then tried to just write tech fair without the words 'easy', 'DIY' etc. However I still wasn't satisfied with my results and I found it really hard to take inspiration from those project ideas. So this lead me onto my next stop which was the one and only Pinterest. When I typed up tech fair ideas, fascinating and interesting projects started popping up and the Tiny Dancers project caught my eye and so I decided that whoever my partner will be, I would have to create the dancers; they are just to cute!

Final TinkerCAD Reflection 



Throughout this journey of using TinkerCAD, I have learnt many things that I didn't know before, I didn't only learn how to use TinkerCAD but I also learned improved at using blogger. This year, I must admit, I used blogger way more than I did last year and now I can officially say that I am a sort of pro, I practiced using all the editing options and I even learnt how to upload videos. On TinkerCAD, I learnt how to move shapes, change the size of shapes, re-create pictures and objects and even create my own project. If I had to re-create my project, I would certainly spend more time on creating my designs on TinkerCAD and try to use a variety of shapes and explore further but overall I am really happy on how my project turned out. 

As I said I am really proud of my work and I actually didn't think both models could turn out like this, especially because I am not even close to being a pro with TinkerCAD and still find it hard to work with it and create proper designs and not just shapes. However I do indeed believe that both of my products are good products and I am not ashamed to show people and tell them how happy I am that they turned out like this. I have still kept to my specification on the target audience and I feel like these to phone holders are perfect for any gender and any age who has a phone and even the price isn't to high or to low. From my beginning primary research and my on experience, I truly think that my products could help people with the problem of losing or forgetting their phone, but at the same time help them with the major problem of tangled earphones that everyone deals with everyday. I  enjoyed this journey of discovering and using TinkerCAD, I complete this unit and reflection knowing that throughout these all these weeks, I have learnt something new about technology and about the world. This has helped me understand how products are initially though of, planned and created, it has given me another perspective of the world I live in today. In the future, I will certainly look back at my work and maybe even try and create something new with TinkerCAD.

Description of Model 1 

Model 1 is the non - technological model, it is the phone holder that has no techy or electronic abilities. Its only abilities are to hold your phone and hold your earphones, hence the price. The white paraboloid is used to wrap your earphones around so they don't get tangled and you don't waste time having to untangle them, resulting in a frustrated person. I used boxes to create the phone stand and placed parts on the sides to make sure the phone is secure and safe and especially won't fall and break. The dangling heart is to add a pop of colour and decoration, but of course if the customer doesn't want to add it then he/she can take it off. Model 1 can also be attached to the wall or furniture so it doesn't take up so much space - this was requested by one of my peers. This model is suitable for every phone, e.g. Apple, Android, Microsoft, Sony etc.

Description of Model 2 

Model 2 is the techy - electronic version of the phone holder. This version can tell the time, hold your phone, hold your earphones and play music so it's like a speaker and phone holder merged together. The first yellow button is the switch on/off, then the doughnut round thing is for the volume, so you can turn it up or turn it down by twisting the button. The other buttons are for  the music and changing the music option and again the white paraboloid is used to wrap the earphones around so they don't get tangled. As well the phone holder place is secured with extra parts on the sides and in the bottom of the holder so the phone doesn't slip off and fall to the ground.

Overall Reflection 

I am really proud of my designs and how they both turned out although I actually prefer model 1 - in my opinion it turned out better and it looked more like my original design. Model 2 was indeed harder to create because of all the detail that I had to pay attention to, all the buttons that were in my hand drawn design had to go onto the TinkerCAD creation, which I must admit was harder than I had thought. Therefore model 2 doesn't exactly look like my original design (the hand-drawn one). I couldn't exactly re-create my idea of model 2 onto TinkerCAD because of the lack of shapes and capability I had on using TinkerCAD, I feel like if I had practiced or completed more lessons on TinkerCAD, my design could've been more complex and it would've looked more interesting. However it wasn't a complete and total failure because it did have things on it that I planned in the beginning and it doesn't look very very different from my original idea. The design still has many things that I wanted it to have, for example, it still shows the time, you can still play music from it, the shape has remained the same and earphones can still be wrapped around the white paraboloid.

Model 1, on the other hand, resembles my design perfectly, I feel like I succeed into creating the phone holder exactly how I wanted it to look like in my head. It has got all the details that my sketch has, and I even managed to add the little heart decoration onto it. Model 1 has the place to put your phone, it has the place the wrap your earphones and you can even hang/ stick it to a wall, desk etc. Exactly how I imagined it! This model has met all my specifications and makes me really happy to say that when I showed some of my peers, they said that if it were ever to go out on the shelves of shops, they would buy it. The only thing that is different from my design is the decoration/addition that I wanted to add to the phone holder. In my sketch, I wanted the decoration/addition to be zodiac signs but unfortunately I couldn't get any so my plan B was to opt for a pretty shape instead. So after deciding between heart and diamond, I finally came to the conclusion that my choice was going to be the heart, hence the heart on the picture above.

Part 1 of Design Specification - Description



My product will be the size of an average men's hand and it will be available in different colors, such as pink, green, blue, white, grey, yellow etc as well the technology related model will come in gold and silver . There will also be two kinds of phone case, one that is electronic, so it will have WiFi, it will be able to play music, find your phone immediately, speaker, find restaurants, call friends etc. Instead the other model is the one that is a plain and has no electronic/ technology related effects. They are going to be made out of metal so that it looks more chic and expensive while at the same time they are not at all expensive. I'm still deciding on the shape and the price so I will be adding that onto the Part 2 of Design Specification.

Aesthetics:

 - color: pumpkin orange, deep carrot orange, Aerolin yellow, non photo blue, Bondi blue, deep sky blue, Tiffany blue, teal, federal blue, Prussian blue, saffron, Dartmouth green, pigment green, mulberry, eggplant purple, plum purple, carmine red, rosso corsa, Hollywood cerise, camel brown, sepia brown, splashed white, white smoke, winter's gate, deep charcoal, rainy day grey, anchor grey

- texture: smooth and shiny

- style: the style is very chic and posh since it is made out of metal ( but teens can also use it because it is not a childish product)

Cost: 

- There are two types of phone cases: the first model ( non technological ) costs 50 Dhs and the second model will cost 120 Dhs which has all the techy abilities it will of course cost

Customer: 

- This product is aimed for anyone who has a phone, or who wants a place to put their phone which is chic, innovative but as well not expensive. This is also not a quite expensive product, unlike similar objects htat you would find in the market which go over 500 Dhs, basically it is a product for anyone. I would also say that it is for both genders since it comes in a variety of different colors and if you had to give a target age, then I would say 13-50's, people who are over 60 may not be in need of a phone holder.

Environmental Considerations: 

- The environmental risks which the second model ( the technological ) has are that green housegases, which technology items send affect the atmosphere as well as weather systems which then result in global warming. Also the ability to use WiFi and play music as well as charge your phone consume resources which aren't renewable ( can't re use ), such as chemicals, natural chemicals and living resources such as animals, forests, fish etc.

Function 

- Basically the main function of both the models is to hold your phone; a place to put your phone when you come home or even if you take it anywhere e.g. on holiday. However there are additional functions/abilities in the second model. In the second model, some additional functions are that it can tell the time, charge your phone, be wireless, play music/ speaker. Also both models have a place where you can wrap your earphones so they don't get jumbled up and it will take you forever to un-do them. As well this phone holder is for Apple. Android, Microsoft, Samsung etc.

Manufacturing 

- Well, to actually make the first model, you don't need so many materials and it's not complicated because the first model is simply made out of plastic and it doesn't have any extra functions. While on the other hand, the second model is more complicated and would require a lot more time and materials as well as knowledge which I don't have; knowledge about parts of a speaker, clock. charger etc. Many more materials would be required, for example the metal that would be used make the actual phone holder, also it would need more attention when it is made and how it is painted, and the details that go into the product.

Software

- The software that I am going to be using is TinkerCAD, the software gives me a variety of shapes and colors to choose from to create my product. What is going to be challenging is that I need to be able to chose the shapes correctly and smartly to be able to create the product the way that I imagine it to look like. Also, this all depends on time but I wish to try other softwares like blender and google sketch to compare those softwares with TinkerCAD.

Safety 

 - Well when thinking about my idea and how it is going to look like, I had to think of how I was going to keep the phone safe and how the phone shouldn't slip off the phone holder and break. I created a phone holder to keep the phone safe not to put the phone in an even more dangerous place.
-  Another point is that by putting this information on the blog, on the materials, size, color, design etc. basically anyone can copy my idea. They can copy the pictures of my sketches and just take it as their own idea, so looking at it from this point of view, my designs and ideas are not safe.

Size 

-  The phone holder should be about the size of an average man's hand, because I didn't want it to be too big and take too much space up because then the people/customers won't know where to place it, but I don't want it to be too small that it is not noticeable and doesn't hold your phone safely.

Model 1: 

Design 1 meets 6 out of 9 specs, it doesn't meet the safety spec because the phone can slip off really easily as well as it doesn't meet the spec for the size because it is a very small phone holder. Also that design is more aimed at teens and people in their 20s not for every gender and age that I have mentioned above 

Design 2 meets 8 out of 9 specs. The only spec that it doesn't meet it the using TinkerCAD one and completely following my sketch because it is quite complicated to re-create. I will probably have to change some small details to be able to re-create this on TinkerCAD and play around with shapes to get me satisfied with it. 


Model 2: 

Design 1 meets 6 specs out of 9. It doesn't meet the safety spec like the one above because the phone can slip off because there is nothing that really holds it back. Also it doesn't meet the environmental spec because the technology used for it will harm the environment. As well, it doesn't tell the time like design 2 does.

Design 2 meets 7 specs out of 9. The two specs that it doesn't meet are the size because it is bigger than the size I originally chose and that it doesn't have the part where you can place your earphones. Of course it doesn't meet the environmental spec because again the metal and materials/technology we are going to be using is harmful to the environment. 


Finalizing and Choosing 


For model 1, I chose design 1 because it is the one that met the most specs out of the two and even though I will work on it and adjust and make some differences, I personally prefer this design and I feel like it is more of a challenge for me where I can prove to Ms. that I can use TinkerCAD and having asked some friends, they all said that they preferred design 1. Now I don't know how much time Ms Veena is giving us to create the final product on TinkerCAD but I know that I want to really try my best to meet all of the specifications and succeed in creating a chic, inexpensive product which will solve people's problem about forgetting or not charging their phone. 

For model 2, I chose design 2 because again it is the one that met most of my specs and even though I have a lot of work to do and I am planning to change my design a bit and take some ideas from design 1, like the earphone clip/holder as well as changing the size of it. I feel that I can create more things with this and that I will enjoy creating this design than the other one. Again I don't know how much time she is giving us to finalize and create our objects but I sure would want to try other softwares and compare to how the design ends up.
